“Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan (The Ghost of Yotsuya)”, Oiwa marries her husband Iemon on her father's orders and leaves him on his own. Her obedience to her father's orders reflects the value that women are supposed to obey men. Oiwa's values reflect the ideology of the samurai society of the time, and one such value is that women are to obey men. Oiwa, who holds the values of the samurai family strongly in her heart, takes revenge on her husband and the people around him who killed her father after she becomes a vengeful spirit. It can be said that her revenge was aimed at destroying both her own and her husband's families and destroying the houses that made up the samurai society. From Oiwa, we can learn about the male-dominated samurai ideology.ReferencesCulture Digital Library Viewed July 16, 2022https://www2.ntj.jac.go.jp/dglib/contents/learn/edc26/sakuhin/jidai1.htmlMIZUOCHI Kiyoshi. 1989. Kabuki Shukujo Roku Edo no Career Woman ‘List of famous kabuki ladies, Career Woman in Edo’. published by Kamakura Shobo. There are many more characters in kabuki than the three discussed here, and each reflects a different set of values. From the three characters discussed here, we could see the values of the Edo period: men who valued loyalty, women who were expected to be mothers, and the male chauvinism of the samurai ideology. Although these are only a few examples, it can be said that the works that are still performed today are those that have been popular since the Edo period and reflect the values of the time. These examples suggest that the view of men and women in the Edo period differed from that of today, in that loyalty was valued and male dominance was the norm.I would like to study more examples of works that were not covered in this essay in the future. 52
