In recent years, the development of information and communication technology has enriched our lives. We can now easily communicate with strangers and people in remote locations using text, voice, and video. This was a major presence in the COVID-19 Disaster. It is a very convenient way to get together without meeting people. On the other hand, this casual communication has become a source of trouble for some people. Especially in text messaging, including social networking services, what should be a casual tool has become a source of difficult problems: what style of writing should be used, should emojis be used, and where should line breaks be placed, and so on. This is where I focus my attention.In order to find out why text message tools are causing us so much trouble, I think it is necessary to first clarify the position of text messages. Text messages are different from both "written" and "spoken" language. This is something that anyone who has ever used text messages has felt. For example, it is easy to understand if we replace the "written" word with a textbook and the "spoken" word with a conversation. Text messaging uses words that are "written," but are similar to "spoken" words, and may also use emojis, question marks, and exclamation points.Linguist John McWhorter runs a non-profit organization that organizes and distributes a variety of lectures by celebrities from around the world. In a lecture for TED (Technology Entertainment Design), he describes text messaging as "a whole new language being developed by young people". In other words, we are using text messaging to communicate in a whole new language. It is only natural that it should feel as difficult as speaking a language that is not one's native tongue. He describes this new language as a "fingered speech".近年、情報通信技術の発達により生活は豊かになっている。見ず知らずの人や離れた場所にいる人とも文字、音声、映像を使い、気軽にコミュニケーションが取れるようになった。これはコロナ禍において大きな存在感を示した。人と会わずに集まることができる、大変便利なものである。一方、この気軽なコミュニケーションは一部の人の間で悩みの種になっている。特にSNSなどテキストメッセージを利用するサービスでは、文体はどうするのか、絵文字は使うのか、改行はどこですれば良いのか、気軽になったはずのツールは難題へと化している。私はここに注目した。テキストメッセージツールが私たちを悩ませる原因を探るために、まずテキストメッセージの立ち位置を明確にする必要があると考えた。テキストメッセージは「書く」言葉とも、「話す」言葉とも違う。これはテキストメッセージを使用したことのある人なら誰でも感じたことがあるだろう。例えば「書く」言葉を教科書、「話す」言葉を会話と置き換えるとわかりやすい。テキストメッセージでは「書く」言葉でありながら「話す」言葉に近い言葉を使い、加えて絵文字や疑問符感嘆符を用いることもある。言語学者のジョン・マクウォーター（John Hamilton McWhorter V, 1965〜）は、TED（Technology Entertainment Design）の講演会の中で、テキストメッセージを「若者が開発中のまったく新しい言語」と表現している。つまり、私たちはテキストメッセージを使って全く新しい言語でやりとりをしているということである。母語でない言葉を使って話すことと同様、難しく感じることは当然である。この全く新しい言語を彼は「指で話す」言語と表現している。この「指で話す」言語はテキストメッセージのみに使用される言語ではないと私は考える。「書く」言葉でも「話す」言葉でもない、だが対話の手段66西野 わか菜NISHINO Wakanaテキストメッセージの今とこれからText Messaging Now and in the Future
