When curating a work produced by a British student, I reconsidered "What is art?" Even though I study art as a student at an art university every day, I think that each individual will continue to ask this big question for the rest of her/his life.I felt that the work of the student I had selected embodies the artist's own living life and the visible light itself. This is because it captures the nature and life the artist loves in detail and expresses it with a warm feeling. And it teaches us that a wonderful work is not for anyone, it is an inseparable pursuit for the artist's thoughts and feelings, and for self.My research on paradise is cross-sectional research between the Theory and Practice Seminar and the Art Anthropology Seminar, and it focuses on "paradise" that has been depicted in Western art in modern and contemporary periods. We study by guessing and considering the ideal world that human beings have been aiming for and the future that we are aiming for. Paradise is a big theme that many artists have chosen, and it has been depicted in various forms throughout history. And even in modern times, the pursuit of this paradise is still being carried out.Rakib Shaw (born 1974) is an Indian-born London-based artist who is widely known for his gorgeous, intricate and detailed paintings of imaginary paradise. Paradise is depicted in the newly released Shaw's work, La Tempesta (after Giorgione).An abstract substance is drawn on the tip of a straw or a stick-like object such as a musical instrument that a man puts on his mouth, and a beautiful garden is drawn inside this substance. The man's surroundings are filled with tension, and behind him the fl ames are burning and thunder is roaring. Stones are rolling on the road where the man walked from the square where the fl ames are rising, and no イギリスの学生が制作した作品をキュレーションするにあたって改めて考えたことは、「芸術とは何か」だ。私自身も美術大学の学生として日々学んでいるさなか、この大きな問いはそれぞれ個人によってこれからも一生問われ続けるように思う。担当した学生の作品は、アーティスト自身の暮らしや見えている光そのものに感じた。彼らは自身の愛する暮らしや自然を仔細に捉え、温かい気持ちで表現しているからだ。そして素晴らしい作品は誰のためでもない、アーティストの思考や気持ちとは切っても切れない、自身のための追求であると我々に教えてくれている。 私が行っている楽園の研究は、西洋美術史と芸術人類学を横断するようなリサーチである。研究方法としては、西洋美術や近代の美術の中で描かれてきた「楽園」に焦点を当て分析し、そこから人類が目指してきた理想の世界やこれから目指していく未来の姿について考察する。楽園は多くのアーティストが主題として選んできた大きなテーマであり、歴史においてさまざまな姿で描かれてきた。そして現代でもこの楽園の追求は行われている。 ラキブ・ショー（Raqib Shaw, 1974〜）は、インドに生まれロンドンを拠点とするアーティストであり、想像上の楽園の豪華で複雑かつ詳細な絵画を描くことで広く知られている。新たに発表されたショーの作品《La tempest（after Giorgione）》の中でも楽園は描かれている。男が口元に当てているストローあるいは楽器のような棒状のものの先に、抽象的な物質が描かれ、この物質の中には美しい庭園が描かれている。男の周囲は緊張感に包まれており、背後では炎が燃え上がり、雷鳴が轟いている。炎が上がっている広場から男が歩いてきた道には石が転がり、花は描かれていない。辛く苦しい現実の中での「楽園への憧れ」が、この絵画では顕著に描かれている。この絵画における楽園の姿は、悲しみの存在しない、純粋80三谷 麻衣MITANI Mai現代における“楽園”とは何か‘Paradise’ in Modern Times - what kind of world is ‘paradise’ for you?
