■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ I, the author, HASEGAWA Sayoko, reflect on my art journey at Joshibi University of Art and Design, majoring in “Art and Culture.” Originally enjoying art as a child, my focus shifted in elementary school towards not gaining recognition, impacting on my pure enjoyment. After a period of creating for self-expression in high school, a friend's death led me to explore the dual nature of “life” and “death” in unconventional ways. I question whether artistic expression parallels the act of defecation, drawing parallels to Georges BATAILLE's view that creating artwork is a parody of excretion. I compare my spontaneous, impulsive style to that of KATAOKA Kenta and CHO Shinta, concluding that all capable of producing art engage in conscious or unconscious acts of excretion. I also identify the Aichi Triennale 2019 as a turning point, witnessing artists destroy their works in protest, which both frightened and intrigued me, immobilizing me further. Ultimately, I realized that past sadness drove my artistic endeavors, but a disconnect between my past and present self prevents current artistic expression. I think that living in contact with art doesn't solely require creating it but also involves thoughtful contemplation.
